Night of the Nuggets: Chapters 10-11
The Amazing Miss Pearl—Helping to Make the World Better for Chickens and People
These next few chapters are focused on the various kinds of Shadowy Specters that Pearl will come across in her adventure within the Nugget Factory. These are all based on myths, legends, and folklore from all part of the world. Wherever there are chickens, there are these creatures. As people moved from place to place and took their chickens with them, these Shadowy Specters followed along.
This first kind is rather frightening in both looks and actions. I can almost hear them screeching loudly, and that gives me shivering goosebumps—or should I call them “chickenbumps”?
After reading, if you think that there is anything too scary for younger folks, please let me know!
The shadowy specters to be most avoided were the Rangdas who are demonic queens of the shadow specters.
They originated in a place named Bali, and have a particular liking for the taste of chicken. (Even to this day, there are large sections of the island dedicated to raising chickens.) Anyone like myself, who investigating a chicken nugget factory, is likely to come across Rangdas who are drawn by the smell of chicken nuggets being cooked.
Rangdas have long teeth, which are better suited for eating a whole chicken rather than chicken nuggets. Pearl guess is that they had invaded the Chicken Nugget Factory because chicken nuggets are plentiful and don’t require as much effort for hunting down as capturing live chickens with all of the human factory workers doing everything for the Rangdas.
They lure people to adopt them into their brains with thought about wealth. You will likely notice that a Rangda always seems to be wearing a hat made of gold, and these hats are quite elaborate and beautiful. As a person obsesses more and more about wealth, the Rangda’s power and control grows until the Rangda acquires a body of flesh and blood.
Although I am a Maker of Hats, you will never find me wearing a Rangda hat or even making a Rangda hat.
Not only does a Rangda have gigantic teeth, it also enjoys having something to eat in each hand, and this means that they have a liking for bite-sized chicken nuggets. They often sit in the middle of a pile of chicken nuggets and use both of their hands alternately to fill their mouths with nuggets.
There are many scary things about a Rangda, but perhaps the most frightening is their glowing orange eyes. This makes it difficult for them to hunt for live chickens at night because their glowing eyes are so noticeable—even for chickens who have difficult seeing when the sun has gone down. Once again, people in the nugget factory have solved this for the Rangda’s.
It is an understatement that the Nugget Factory was absolutely infested with all kinds of Rangdas. This can be seen as a positive since the only thing outside of the Factory that a Rangda hunts and eats is children. By keeping Rangdas confined to the Nugget Factory and eating nuggets instead, the Factory actually protects children. Nevertheless, there are some factory workers which take home bags of almost free “employee discount” chicken nuggets to feed their children, and a Rangda is likely to follow the worker home. Even just the smell on their factory uniforms can be alluring to a Rangda.
When all is said and done, Rangdas are drawn to the odor of chickens and chicken nuggets. The factory workers can either protect their children from the Rangdas who might follow them home or from the toxic chemicals in chicken nuggets, but they can’t protect them from both!
Our Best Advice for the Days Ahead: Love chickens and children by avoiding chicken nuggets. Read the ingredients in your food and look for suspicious chemicals—or simply grow your own organic food. Pearl has never spotted a Rangda hanging around a vegetable garden.
